Exhibitions

It is with great pleasure that we present a solo exhibition of works by Sawako Nasu titled Linus’ Blanket from Fri., Jan. 10 to March 29, 2025 at KEN NAKAHASHI.

This exhibition, the first solo show to be held at the gallery, consists of pieces that make use of old canvases – an approach that is emblematic of Nasu’s work. It also marks the first time that a solo show has been held for an extended period at the gallery.

The exhibition’s title is derived from the “security blanket” that Linus, a character in the Peanuts cartoon, carries around with him at all times. Drawing comparisons between Linus’ blanket, a symbol of childhood security and attachment, and canvas, the works explore a theme that is closely connected to Nasu’s creative practice.

Nasu considers the traces of the original artist’s touch and the passage of time that are etched into the canvases, as well as the physical scars and the aging process, to be crucial elements in her works. Through slight modifications and additions, Nasu evokes the narrative and sensibility that is concealed within the works, giving rise to a visual experience in which time and memory seem to intersect.

Along with epic works arranged to envelop the entire display space, this exhibition is based on a flexible design that makes it possible to change the smaller works at any time. Moreover, the nails and screw holes employed in the display process are incorporated into the space, enabling it to be constantly change throughout the exhibition.

We hope that you will join us to witness the moment at which canvases, shrouded in memory and time, are transformed into living beings.

Sawako Nasu

Born in Tokyo in 1996. Completed a graduate course in painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, where she studied with Masato Kobayashi. Growing up in a theater family, Nasu developed unique spatial expressions during her involvement with stage art and direction. Focusing primarily on landscapes and portraits made by applying thin layers of oil paint, Nasu explores the potential of current painting expressions based on the theme of the difficulty of bridging contemporary life and art of the past.
